Joss Bay, Broadstairs
Joss Bay is a popular sandy beach sheltered by steep chalk cliffs and the bay is reputedly named after an eighteenth-century smuggler, Joss Snelling.
He was notorious for importing a variety of contraband to the various beaches of the Isle of Thanet in the late 1800s. Joss Snelling was born in 1741 and lived to the extraordinary age of 96.He managed to make a mockery of the customs men whilst many of his contemporaries went to the gallows or were deported.
